Outsourcing Boom Equals School Business Boom

The success of business process outsourcing (BPO) in the Philippines has led to another boom in the country. The number of schools offering and catering to BPO (call center, medical transcription, IT) has increased in the last five years. These schools offer everything from short-courses to degree programs. A college degree is not always a requirement when entering these schools, which means, drop-outs get a new lease in life.

There are now at least 17 companies offering medical transcription services in the Philippines. Most of these companies have now started to venture into medical transcriptionists (MT) training in order to ensure that they will have enough supply of MT to meet the manpower demands of the industry. This system works for the benefit of the company because they are assured that the people they hire are at par with the standards they require.

All MT students are required to pass the certification program of the government office Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA). This certification program is an agreement set by the Philippine Government and the US government, currently our biggest medical transcription client, to ensure that local transcriptionists possess the qualification and maturity to engage in this kind of work. This agreement is part of outsourcing business promotion initiated by the government to lure investors in.

In the call center (contact center) business, the same scheme applies. Contact center companies have in-house training programs for newly hired employees. The training programs are designed specifically to meet the requirements and standards of the company. These schools, whether they are in-house or not, follow the same set of criteria for training and testing in order to ensure that employees are fully qualified to do the tasks.

Aside from these, some universities and colleges have started offering vocational training for several BPO-related industries. These are cheaper alternatives to the ones being offered by medical transcription companies and cater more to less affluent students.

The growth of BPO industry has spurred the growth of related or affiliated industries. Information technology businesses have long been benefiting from BPOs. The most recent addition to this growing list are schools and training centers.

10 Tips to Find Work at Home

During my four years of working from home I have learned a lot about where to find work, how to find work and what is actually work and what is a business. With so much to learn though it can be difficult to know where to begin. That is why I came up with these 10 tips.

1. Never pay for a job, you should not have to pay someone just for the opportunity to work for or with them. Now this does not mean it doesn't cost anything to start working from home, it may, depending on equipment, what you need to do the job, like software, and if you have to pay for a background check or to be incorporated. However if you are ever confused about an expense, ask the company directly for an explanation and check the company out on the Better Business Bureau or Ripoff Report.

2. Ask people you know, or local companies if they have work at home contractors (people paid to work, but not considered employees) or if they hire for working at home, you may even be able to ask your own boss if you are currently working outside the home.

3. Keep track of who you contact, who you speak to, when you apply, and other information like this, that way you will always know where and if you have applications out at different companies.

4. There are great resources online for work at homers. One particular forum is WAHM (actually a message board), listed under telecommuting moms, however anyone who wants to telecommute can join. These people have been on these boards for quite awhile and have also been around the block as far as finding scams and finding real work for home.

5. Consider an at home business. These days there seems to be a market for everything. If you are good at one particular hobby, or trade, advertise yourself, and make money that way. Be careful to follow local laws and regulations though. Also remember the internet is often a great place to advertise and is many times free.

6. If you are really desperate, you may not be able to be picky from the get go. Accept what comes your way, because often times, it is the bottom of the barrel and you can work your way up.

7. Ebay is a great site to start with, anything laying around your house? List it. Got an information product, write it up and sell it.

8. Stay on track. Once you get hired or contracted it is time to be your own boss. This means you can work when you want, and not work when you do not want to. Unfortunately if you are trying to find work from home, you probably need the money, and therefore should not have too much time off. Remember there is always a reason not to work, just don't let them all get to you.

9. Check local colleges or vocational centers for training for work at home jobs. Occupations like medical transcription and billing, legal transcription, proofreading, and editing can be done at home, there is also the option of getting certified for a day care center.

10. Don't give up. It took me months to find a real work at home job, and I have still searched, either to see what else is out there, if there is something more I would like to do, if I could make more.

Due to the growth in healthcare services, there is a growing need for medical transcription. It is advisable for a student interested in pursuing this profession to get a certificate from one of the accredited universities.

A certificate in medical transcription, CMT, is awarded by The American Association for Medical Transcription (AAMT). Since medicine is a continuously changing sphere, medical transcriptionists are expected to keep their skills updated, so this certificate needs to be renewed every three years. A person who wants to do a certificate course in medical transcription can either enroll in one of the schools or colleges offering this course or enroll online and learn from home.

There are several nationally recognized medical transcription online certification courses available. This includes a medical terminology course at no additional cost. An aspirant can earn a medical career diploma from home in one year by studying for as little as one hour a day. Medical Transcriptionist Online

Medical transcription is a career that involves creating lucid and readable medical documents from the audio tapes on which the doctors have made notes. These documents are then used for keeping medical records and insurance reimbursement.

It is important for the transcriptionist to be able to understand medical terminology, physiology, human anatomy, pharmacology and diagnosis. They must also be able to understand and translate abbreviations and medical jargon into their expanded forms. They should be able to apply the particular principles that are involved with medical records. They should also ensure the legal and ethical necessities required for keeping patient information confidential.

Most health care services pass on audio transcript to medical transcriptionists using digital or analog dictating equipment. The Internet is a very convenient and popular medium for transmitting notes. Transcriptionists obtain dictations over the net and are able to promptly send the transcribed documents to clients.

Medical transcriptionists work by initially listening to recordings on a headset and using a foot pedal to pause the recording when required. They type the text onto a personal computer or word processor, editing for grammar. The documents they mainly write include history of patient, consultation reports, physical examination reports, diagnostic imaging and even operative reports. They are also expected to produce discharge summaries, autopsy reports, progress notes and referral letters. The documents are then sent back to the client and once approved are filed among the permanent documents of the patient.

Another method uses speech recognition technology, which translates sound into text and creates drafts of the reports. This is most often done electronically. These reports need to be formatted, edited and checked for any medical mistakes. Medical fields using standardized terminology, such as pathology or radiology, benefit the most from speech recognition technology. Speech recognition technology is expected to become more popular once it becomes more sophisticated and advanced.
